Short Session on Day 2 of Oakley Pro 2011 at Canggu

2 April 2011, Canggu-Bali: Today’s competition action was suspended after just two heats of Round 2 due to the deteriorating wave conditions. At 7:30 am there were 2-3 foots set waves hitting Canggu’s rivermouth righthander so Heat 1 of Round 2 was called on, but as the tide rose the swell seemed to become less and less consistent and by the end of Heat 2 Head Judge Wayan Pica called for a 30 minute break to assess the situation.
By 9:30 am it was officially called off, as with 12 more days remaining in the waiting period and an increase in the swell expected some time tomorrow there was no reason to send the surfers out to compete at Canggu in sub par conditions.

Last’s year’s Oakley Pro 10 winner Made Awan was satisfied with the call, saying “I got here early this morning and got a few waves in before the start, and it was just ok, nothing really great. Even though I’m not surfing until Round 3, I would say that its better to wait and give the boys some better waves to surf in while we have the option.” When asked what he thought about his chances for a repeat win this year he replied, “Last year my win was a great way to start out the year, and I plan to do the same this year. I’m sure we’ll get good waves later, and I just want to get out there and rip them up!”
By all accounts Dylan Amar had the wave of the morning, which he cut apart all the way into the beach to post a 5.0 score and win Heat 2, while young Putu Anggara on his backhand dissected a couple to win the first heat of the morning and slot himself into a Round 3 berth.
Tomorrow’s swell forecast is called for an increase later in the day, but the remaining Round 2 contestants were told to show up at the beach in the morning as several heats may be run if conditions allow.

Also on the agenda tomorrow is the first heat/round of the inaugural Oakley Tag Team Challenge, where tomorrow 4 teams (Canggu, Pererenan, Nusa Lembongan, and Legian), will battle it out for a place in the semifinals to be held again at Canggu in August at the Oakley Pro Junior. The winners of the Semifinals will meet at the Oakley World Pro Junior at Keramas in October, with the winning team all going home with brand new Firewire surfboards.
